The Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago is being sued by an unidentified man who alleges he was sexually abused as a child by a therapist working in a church counseling center.

In the negligence lawsuit filed in Cook County Circuit Court, the man alleges the abuse occurred between 1977 and 1983 at the hands of therapist William Groendyke, who worked in the Catholic Family Consultation Service.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports the lawsuit claims the church ignored Groendyke's actions. Groendyke, who was not a priest, worked in the counseling center from 1969 to 1985, and had been accused, but never convicted, of abusing children.

Jamie M. Trapp, attorney for the plaintiff, says he believes Groendyke has since died.

A spokeswoman for the archdiocese says officials haven't seen the lawsuit and couldn't comment.
