Sean Patrick O'Malley

Today, in the Vatican, Benedict XVI received Card. Sean Patrick O'Malley, Archbishop of Boston and champion of the fight against sexual abuse committed by members of the clergy in the U.S. The Capuchin Cardinal was the first U.S. bishop to be received in a "visit ad limina" and the audience was held three days ahead of schedule.

After O'Malley entered the Pope's private library, the prelates of "Region 1", which includes all the dioceses of the State of Massachusetts, went in one by one. The meeting schedule will keep the Pope busy until next September.

In April 2007, the Archbishop of Boston accompanied abuse victims to Washington for a meeting with the Pope and in previous months, O'Malley was sent by the Pope to Ireland as an Apostolic visitor.
