Each and every person at Penn State who knew about or suspected Coach Sandusky's alleged child sex crimes should publicly apologize and step down. This includes:

Michael McQueary (the grad student who initially informed Coach Paterno of Sandusky’s impropriety)

Joe Paterno, Head Football Coach

Graham Spanier, PSU President

"I told my boss" or "I told another employee" are inadequate excuses when it comes to possible child sexual abuse. "I immediately called the police" is the only appropriate and prudent response. Unfortunately, none of the men listed above did this in a timely fashion, subjecting countless other children to possible risk.

This is especially egregious considering the fact that Sandusky ran a program that not only allowed him access to young children, but specifically at-risk youth. These children were more vulnerable because they looked up to Sandusky as a father-figure and a mentor, and he knew of that admiration and exploited it.

These men at Penn State are all well-educated. They absolutely knew better and went about reporting this situation in an ignorant and dangerous manner. They choose to protect themselves, their reputations, their jobs and their programs - academic or athletic - instead of protecting innocent children.

Each of them should feel ashamed. Each should publicly apologize and step down.

(SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, is the world’s oldest and largest support group for clergy abuse victims. We’ve been around for 23 years and have more than 10,000 members. Despite the word “priest” in our title, we have members who were molested by religious figures of all denominations, including nuns, rabbis, bishops, and Protestant ministers. Our website is SNAPnetwork.org)
