The Penn State University Board of Trustees has fired head football coach Joe Paterno and school president Graham Spanier, four days after a former assistant coach was arrested on charges of sexually abusing children. Earlier Wednesday, Paterno had announced he would retire at the end of the 2011 season, when his contract was set to expire.

Announcing the move Wednesday night, board vice chairman John Surma said the changes were "effective immediately."

On Nov. 5, former Penn State defensive coordinator Gerald "Jerry" Sandusky was charged with sexually abusing eight boys following a grand jury investigation that also led to charges against two university officials. Athletic director Tim Curley and a vice president, Gary Schultz, are accused of perjury and failing to report suspected child abuse. Both have stepped down from their posts.

The scandal has shocked the Penn State community. Pennsylvania Attorney General Linda Kelly says the investigation is ongoing but that Paterno is "not regarded as a target."
