Thanks to the courage of this brave survivor who worked up the strength to come forward, talk to secular authorities, and seek justice and the protection of children, a jury in Miami today sent a powerful message to the predator priest. While no amount of money can restore the innocence shattered due to sexual violence, this verdict is a resounding condemnation of the actions of Fr. Neil Doherty. We are proud of the victim for coming forward and proud of the men and women that made this decision today.

Archdiocesan officials recruited, educated, ordained, trained, supervised and shielded this serial predator. We hope that they too will be held responsible to some degree for his crimes. Now more than ever, the Archdiocese of Miami should make an effort to help repair the damage done by Fr. Doherty and do real outreach. The Archbishop should visit every parish where this predator worked and beg others who may have seen or suspected Fr. Doherty’s crimes to come forward, talk to police, get help, and start healing. And we hope the courts will let this brave victim hold archdiocesan officials responsible for their role in this horrific betrayal.
