BUCKSPORT, Maine (AP) — A well-known health care advocate from Maine has been found dead in the Penobscot River.

The Waldo County Sheriff's Department reports that the Rev. Robert Carlson's body was found Sunday morning in the river in Bucksport.

Carlson was the founder and president of Penobscot Community Health Care, an organization founded to provide affordable health care for Bangor area residents.

The Bangor resident was also a chaplain for area police and fire departments. He was 68.

Chief Deputy Jeff Trafton tells the Bangor Daily News that Carlson's death remains under investigation, but there were reports of someone on the bridge shortly before his body was found.

Former Gov. John Baldacci says Carlson was a source of comfort for many families whose work had an impact on the life of thousands.
