Father Demets

An Arkansas priest has been removed from his job after allegedly assaulting a child.

The Arkansas Catholic, the official newspaper of the Diocese of Little Rock, reports that Father Laurent Demets was accused last week of hitting a child at St. Michael Church in Cherokee Village. The allegation against Father Demets did not involve sexual misconduct, but was credible enough to merit an investigation by the diocese.

The paper reports that Demets admitted striking the child and has been removed from the Latin Mass Community in Cherokee Village pending completion of the investigation. The paper says Demets has been reported to the Arkansas Hotline for Crimes Against Children, as required by state law.

The diocese reports that the Cherokee Village congregation will celebrate mass in English until a new priest can be assigned to the area.
