Penn State alum & advocates to leaflet game

They say to Ohio State: “It COULD happen here”

Group urges school staff & students to “be vigilant”

As fans enter football stadium, they’ll hand out fliers

“University officials should reach out to those in pain,” they say

Group: “A one-time Nittany Lions gesture doesn’t heal the wounded”

What:

Holding signs and childhood photos at a sidewalk news conference, advocates for child sex abuse victims will urge Ohio State students and staff to

— gently ask one another if they were molested as kids by anyone,

— urge those who were to get therapy and call police, and

— remember that a child sex abuse and cover up scandal –like the one at Penn State – could happen here, unless university employees and attendees are vigilant

Where:

Outside of Woody Hayes Stadium in downtown Columbus OH

When:

Saturday, November 19 from 1:45 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. (The game starts at 3:30 p.m.)

Who:

Two-three victims and advocates for sex abuse victims who are members of a group called NSAC, the National Survivors Advocate Coalition (http://nationalsurvivoradvocatescoalition.wordpress.com/), including a Dayton woman who is a Penn State alum

Why:

The group feels that the same culture and practices that enabled Penn State officials to conceal a coach’s child sex crimes exist at Ohio State. Those factors include an excessive deference to high profile athletic program officials, a university strongly devoted to protecting its image, young students anxious to please powerful coaches, and a largely male hierarchy.

NSAC is urging Ohio State students and staff to ask everyone they know if they were sexually violated as kids, and to prod those who were assaulted to contact police and other trusted sources of help. It’s never too late, the group says, for those who saw, suspected or suffered child sex crimes to speak up, protect others, expose wrongdoing and start healing.

The group also wants to remind citizens that child molesters are usually charming, charismatic adults, not “creepy” social misfits. And it urges parents to talk with children early and often about “safe touch” and what to do if any grown-up touches or tries to touch their “private parts.”

Finally, NSAC is publicly calling on Penn State officials to use “every possible resource and avenue” to reach out, find, and help others who may have been molested by Coach Jerry Sandusky.

Their signs will say “Kids are still hurting” and “Find and help the wounded.”
