Society of Jesus Chicago-Detroit Province Catholic Priest Arrested on Sexual Assault on a Child In Douglas County

NARRATIVE: Douglas County Sheriff Office (DCSO) Special Victims Unit investigated Father Richard James Kurtz, S.J. (Society of Jesus) (67 YOM) on charges of Sexual Assault on a child by one in a position of trust (Class 4 felony) and attempted Sexual Assault on a child by one in a position of trust (Class 5 Felony). The investigation began in June of 2011 when the Society of Jesus Chicago-Detroit Province notified the DCSO of the alleged crimes that occurred in 2001. A warrant was issued for Father Kurtz' arrest on November 18, 2011.

Father Richard James Kurtz, S.J. worked as a Chemistry Teacher at the University of Detroit High School in Detroit Michigan at the time of the alleged assault. The victim and Father Richard James Kurtz, S.J. were in Douglas County when the alleged assault occurred. The victim was a male under the age of 18 at the time of the assault. The alleged assault did not have any connection to any church in Colorado.

On November 21, 2011, Father Richard James Kurtz was arrested in Chicago and booked into the Chicago jail on a $100,000.00 bond.

This investigation is on-going and no further information is available at this time. Detectives have filed a case with the 18th Judicial District Attorney's Office against Father Richard James Kurtz and the case has been sealed.
