(NECN: Greg Wayland, Boston) - Cardinal Bernard Law, the archbishop of Boston who resigned in 2002 after the priest sex abuse scandal broke in the U.S., has retired from his post as the head of a major Roman basilica.

Vatican officials confirm that Pope Benedict XVI accepted Law's resignation as the head of St. Mary Major basilica. A Spanish monsignor will be replacing Law.

Law's retirement as head of the major Roman basilica comes after years of criticism by victims of priestly sex abuse, who insisted that bishops who covered up the scandal should face punishment.

Law, 80, was the first - and so far - the only U.S. bishop to resign for mishandling cases of abuse at the hands of priests.
