ENNISCORTHY native Aoife Kavanagh has found herself at the centre a costly controversy as the reporter who made a unfounded allegations against a missionary priest.

The popular 'Morning Ireland' presenter was working for 'Prime Time' when she presented untrue allegations that Father Kevin Reynolds, now working as a parish priest in County Galway, sexually abused a teenager in Kenya and fathered a child by her. The programme was broadcast in spite of an offer by the defamed cleric to take a paternity test. The result was a bill for more than a million euro in the national station's biggest ever libel settlement.

The case is likely to mean a call to Leinster house for the journalist as a Dail committee is taking an interest in how so much licence fee money could be wasted in this way. And an independent review is underway by Professor John Horgan as to how 'Prime Time' went so horribly wrong.

NUJ official Seamus Dooley has sympathised with Father Reynolds and the way in which his good name was sullied by the programme makers.

However, he also suggested that too much emphasis had been put on the role of one reporter in the coverage of the story which ended up before the High Court.

Aoife Kavanagh's parents and members of her family live in Enniscorthy.
