PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - A man who says he was molested by a teacher and coach at Cheverus High School more than 30 years ago is speaking out against child abuse.

John Clark says the Penn State sex abuse scandal has brough up many painful memories for him about the abuse he suffered at the hands of his teacher, Charles Malia.

Clark held a news conference Tuesday in front of Cheverus High School.

He says the school did the same thing officials from Penn State are accused of doing by ignoring reports of child abuse. Malia admitted to the abuse about ten years ago but said it stopped in the 1970s.

Clark and other alleged victims from that time were unable to press charges because at the time there was a statute of limitations in place. The case did prompt a bill that did away with Maine's statute of limitations.

Clark says "I think at some point, you have to stop focusing on those who are responsible, which obviously goes without saying needs to be addressed, however the next step, which never happened here, was fully taking care of the people who were damaged and continued on with life in a compromised position with a lot of times not even the abilities to help themselves."

Cheverus Vice President of Institutional Advancement, Brian Dudley, says the school supports the right of these victims to remember activities that happened some 30 and 40 years ago.

Since that time, steps have been taken to make sure this doesn't happen again.
