MENDHAM, N.J. — A judge has cut the bail of a man accused of using a sledgehammer to destroy a New Jersey monument to victims of sexual abuse.

Authorities said Tuesday they would not object to lowering the bail for 37-year-old Gordon Ellis to $10,000 from $25,000 because he has no prior convictions.

He is charged with criminal mischief, desecrating a monument and a weapons charge.

Police say alcohol played a role in Friday's destruction of the monument outside a Roman Catholic church in Mendham.

A spokesman for the Diocese of Paterson also tells The Star Ledger that the church will replace the monument at St. Joseph Church "exactly as it was." It was put up in 2004 to children who suffered sexual abuse at St. Joseph and elsewhere.
