RTE's 'Prime Time Investigates' programme is being suspended after Communications Minister Pat Rabbitte confirmed there will be an independent inquiry into the programme's defamation of Fr Kevin Reynolds.

A libel case was settled last week after the priest was wrongly accused of raping a teenage girl in Kenya and making her pregnant.

The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI) is due to report back to the Government on the matter within two months.

Meanwhile, the Oireachtas Communications Committee is also set to look into the matter.

Fine Gael's Andrew Doyle, who is the committee's chairman, said it had invited both RTE and the BAI to make representations in a couple of weeks.

He said the committee was waiting to hear back from the two bodies before setting a date for any meeting between the committee and the BAI and RTE, but that it would be "sooner rather than later".
