POPE Benedict has accepted the resignation of the Bishop of Derry due to ill health.

Bishop Seamus Hegarty, 71, announced he was standing down earlier this month because he was receiving treatment.

"I would ask for prayers that the Holy Spirit may guide the selection of the new Bishop of Derry. On a personal level, I would entrust my health to the prayers of the people of the diocese," he said.

He was ordained as a priest in 1966 and has been Bishop of Derry since 1994.

He was consecrated Bishop of Raphoe in 1982.

A group of eight priests will elect a diocesan administrator while the post of bishop is vacant.
