Natchitoches, La. —

A priest from Natchitoches Parish was arrested Tuesday by Louisiana State Police for theft exceeding $250,000.

James A. Foster, 66, was arrested and charged with one count of theft exceeding $250,000 as a result stemming from a state police investigation.

According to the state police, Foster, who was the pastor at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Natchitoches, served as the pastor of the parish and used parish funds to issue checks to himself and deprive the parish and diocese of funds. Between January 2008 and when he was arrested, police say he obtained over $250,000 from parish funds.

State police initiated an investigation after a request was received from the Catholic Diocese of Alexandria. After his arrest, he was booked into the Natchitoches Parish Detention Center.
