MIRIAM O'CALLAGHAN'S HUSBAND Steve Carson has been named as the acting editor of current affairs at RTÉ.

He will remain in the role for the duration of the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland's inquiry into the Prime Time Investigates programme about Fr Kevin Reynolds.

He temporarily replaces Ken O'Shea who is stepping aside until the station's internal inquiry and the BAI inquiry are completed.

Carson will also take over the executive editor position at Prime Time Investigates while maintaining his current responsibility as director of programmes.

Carson and O'Callaghan married in 2000 after meeting while working on BBC's Newsnight together in the late 1990s.

The national broadcaster also said that Cillian de Paor will act as managing director of news and current affairs as Ed Mulhall also steps aside for the duration of the investigations.

Last night, RTÉ aired another apology to Fr Reynolds on foot of numerous complaints from viewers regarding the quality of the first correction.

The second apology was broadcast after Friday's Nine O'Clock News. It outlined the station's regret about a programme which alleged that Fr Reynolds had raped a teenage girl in Kenya in the 1980s and fathered a child with her.

In a libel action taken by the priest, RTÉ accepted that the accusations were untrue, baseless and without any foundation. Damages were paid to Reynolds and the court ordered the public apology.
