SACRAMENTO, Calif. - A priest serving in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sacramento, Calif., was taken into custody Wednesday night on suspicision of child molestation, the diocese said.

The Rev. Uriel Ojeda, 32, surrendered Wednesday, said the Most Rev. Jaime Soto, bishop of the Diocese of Sacramento. Ojeda was arrested on two charges of felony lewd and lascivious acts with a minor, said Kevin Eckery, a spokesman for the diocese.

The diocese contacted the Sacramento Police Department and Sacramento County Child Protective Services after receiving a complaint Tuesday from a parishioner, Soto said.

"I have personally spoken to the family involved, and they are in great pain. ... What they have endured has been difficult, and I grieve for what they have suffered and are suffering," Soto said. "Yet I also admire the courage with which they have come forward."

Ojeda is assigned to Our Lady of Mercy Roman Catholic Church in Redding, Calif. Soto urged anyone else who believes they were a victim of Ojeda to come forward.

Bail for the priest was set at $5 million. According to jail records, Ojeda was scheduled to appear in court Friday.
