A Roman Catholic diocese in Nova Scotia has now submitted the first two payments in a $13-million legal settlement with alleged victims of sexual abuse.

The payments thus far total $8.6 million — about $4.6 million in May and another $4 million last month.

Rev. Paul Abbass, spokesman for the Diocese of Antigonish, says the final payment of $4.4 million to alleged victims is due next November.

Abbass says the money will come from the sales of church properties, which are expected to slow down as winter approaches.

About 75 properties have been sold so far and roughly another 150 are up for sale.

Abbass says the diocese is also allowing for additional costs.

He says they're currently allowing for up to $3 million for expenses including legal fees, along with $2 million for a potential payout in a lawsuit on behalf of alleged victims who didn't take part in the settlement.

He says that means the diocese is currently anticipating a potential total cost in the range of about $18 million.
