Fr. Kelleher's admission of guilt brings some comfort to his victims. It also shows, however, the continuing callousness, recklessness and secrecy of North Carolina Catholic officials.

For years, top church staff have pledged to be "open and transparent" in child sex cases. It's likely they've known for weeks or months about Fr. Kelleher's admission. But they've done what Catholic officials have done for decades in child sex cases – kept quiet.

We hope North Carolina Catholics will challenge their bishop over his self-serving secrecy.

And we hope that every single person who saw, suspected or suffered abuse by Fr. Kelleher – or any cleric – will speak up, get help, expose wrongdoers, protect kids and start healing.
