WATERBURY — Call it a confession. An acknowledgment of a mistake. Contrition. Or maybe it was just a sales pitch.

Those are a few ways to look at the 20-minute conversation between the Rev. Kevin Gray, the man convicted of stealing more than a $1 million from Sacred Heart/Sagrado Corazon Church, and a parole board listening to his story.

Gray's plea for leniency worked. The priest — who lied about having stomach cancer, squandered thousands in church funds on posh hotels and pricey dinners and stole to fund a life few could dream of — will get out of prison early.
