A jury in Madison has acquitted a priest of charges he sexually assaulted a teenage girl in 2004.

Joseph Gibbs Clauder, 65, has not had a public ministry role since 1999, when he was involved in an improper relaltionship with an adult woman.

He was charged earlier this year with 2nd degree sexaul assault of a child, after the alleged victim came forward in 2009, when she was 20. She was 14 at the time she claimed Clauder had touched her inappropirately at her house.

The Wisconsin State Journal has the story about the jury's not guilty verdict, after 10 hours of deliberation.

The group Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, or SNAP, claims it alerted the Attorney General's office about the woman's claim, after the Madison bishop referred it only to the Vatican for further investigation.
