Tom Green County Precinct 1 County Commissioner Ralph Hoelscher just finished an hourlong Commissioners Court meeting — listening to road construction and a property and safety disagreement among a few neighbors — when he read a letter about the destruction of the United States.

The letter came from the polygamous Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, a purported revelation from God to the FLDS leader and "prophet" Warren Jeffs. Jeffs is in prison in Palestine, Texas, serving a sentence of life plus 20 years for sexually assaulting girls ages 12 and 15 years old.

"There shall be a complete besom of destructive power come forth," the letter states.

The letter details that the sea will be heaving beyond its bounds, burying and washing away cities, shaking the earth.

The cleansing will allow God to carry out his work in North and South America, the letter purports.

"We'll just have to wait and see," Hoelscher said.

Commissioners received three letters, dated Oct. 31, Nov. 1 and Nov. 12. The Nov. 12 states that the "most heinous crime" is the "murder of unborn children."

In another letter, God allegedly asks rulers to allow the church to practice polygamy in peace, and to leave FLDS land trust funds alone, as one in Utah has gone into state control. God also allegedly asks that FLDS men in prison go free. Ten men have undergone prosecution and received sentences in Texas for crimes such as bigamy, performing illegal ceremonies in connection with underage marriage, and sexual assault of children.

In the letter, God allegedly warns people in Australia that a tidal wave is coming.

"Many shall perish who will not move to higher lands of elevation," the letter states.

Russia and China are sternly warned to leave the "land of Zion" alone. Iran is told to stop aggression against Israel, and Turkey is called to help Israel.

The letters are certified by Vaughan E. Taylor, certified as "Patriarch" in the FLDS, and John Barlow "Counselor in the Bishop" of the FLDS.

A phone number for Taylor was given at the end of each letter, and the www.flds.org website where people can buy the proclamations with a credit card.

Item number 107, "Jesus Christ, Son Ahman, Speaketh His Full Warning of Judgments to All Nations," for instance, costs $1.

Taylor could not be reached.

"He is nuts," Precinct 2 Commissioner Aubrey DeCordova said about Jeffs.

Precinct 4 County Commissioner Yantis Green said he was surprised that the letter was addressed to him personally.

Staff for the district courts in Tom Green County said district judges have also received bulk mail from the FLDS.

The letters have reportedly been received by members of the Utah legislator and judges throughout Texas.

Jeffs has sent out many letters in the past, drafting one in the middle of his sexual assault trial in Tom Green County.
