A Greenwich priest accused of stealing at least $300,000 from his church faces no more than 16 months in prison after pleading guilty to a reduced charge in U.S. District Court in New Haven Thursday.

Michael Moynihan, 59, a former pastor at St. Michael the Archangel Parish in Greenwich, pleaded guilty to a single count of obstruction of an official proceeding.

As pastor, Moynihan was responsible for the church's bank accounts. Federal prosecutors said he deposited donated money into a secret account and used about $300,000 to pay his personal credit card bills over four years.

Even after learning that the FBI was looking into his church's finances, Moynihan repeatedly lied to authorities and church accountants, prosecutors said.

Moynihan's sentencing date was not immediately available.
