Keynote: Marci Hamilton speaking on Legal Reform and Protecting Our Kids: Ten years ago, we were shocked to learn that men we revered and trusted — Catholic Bishops — were capable of tolerating child sex abuse by their own clergy to protect the image of the Church. Ten years later, we learned that Penn State, then The Citadel, and Syracuse University also covered up child sex abuse. It has become abundantly clear that the legal system has a long way to go to deter the cover-ups and to protect our children. Enforceable, mandatory reporting and expanded statutes of limitations are the minimum needed to make this world a safer place for children. There is hope, because these reforms already have passed in several states and numerous states are considering them. There is also a movement now for the federal government to induce the states to more effectively protect children through incentives. These are reasons to be optimistic and to keep fighting for our kids.
