There are new allegations of sex abuse against a local retired teacher and basketball coach.

He taught science classes and coached at both DeSmet and Francis Howell high schools. The alleged abuse happened decades ago, but child advocates believe there could also be more recent victims.

"We do know through research that most offenders have more than just one victim, especially someone who's had long-term access to different children," Linda McQuary, child advocate at the Kathy J. Weinman Children's Advocacy Center says.

Thursday, DeSmet Jesuit High School sent a letter home to parents and out to its alumni urging anyone who may have had inappropriate contact with this coach to come forward. We're not naming him because he has not been charged with a crime, but if this rings a bell, police want to hear from you.

The man taught science and coached basketball at DeSmet from 1970 to 1979, then took the head coaching job at Francis Howell High School in St. Charles until he retired in 2000.

The allegations surfaced when a former DeSmet student said the coach molested him off campus in the 1970s. Ge just came forward with his story, but it was too long ago to prosecute based on the staute of limitations.

Child advocates say the national, heightened awareness surrounding the alleged Penn State abuse cases may have prompted the man to come forward after all these years.

"It might just take this one moment of someone feeling strong enough to come forward because someone else has and have that feeling of support and that they will be believed," McQuary says.

"Any time there's a crime of a nature like this, we want to be notified and definitely want to check it out and pursue it as far as we can," Sgt. Jon Romas, Creve Coeur Police Department, says.

The Francis Howell School District was also made aware of the allegations on Thursday but opted not to notify its alumni at this point.

Anyone with information on the teacher and coach should call police. Creve Coeur Police are leading the investigation: 314-737-4600.
