An Irish advocacy group called Thursday for an investigation into allegations that former Dublin Archbishop John Charles McQuaid molested children.

The group One in Four spoke out following reports that the Murphy Commission, which investigated the Catholic Church's handling of child abuse cases, had received information about McQuaid, who was archbishop from 1940 to 1972 and head of the church in Ireland. He died in 1973 at age 78.

"If these allegations are true, then the sexual abuse of children extended to the very highest levels in the Irish Catholic Church," Maeve Lewis, One in Four's executive director, said. "Dr. McQuaid was archbishop of Dublin for over 30 years and was at that time possibly the most powerful, influential and feared man in Ireland. If Archbishop McQuaid was, as is alleged, a sex offender himself, then it is no wonder that the secrecy and coverups which have characterized the church's handling of sexual abuse was so entrenched."
