It's alarming that Philly Catholic officials still want to interfere in criminal investigations by insisting that their defense lawyers be involved in every single conversation or e mail between church employees and law enforcement.

The prosecutor's right: this rigid requirement will deter victims, witnesses and whistleblowers from contacting police and prosecutors. It is a chilling, self-serving move by a church hierarchy with a horrific record of ignoring and concealing heinous child sex crimes. It's inexcusable.

It's disingenuous for Archbishop Chaput's lawyers to claim that they "hope and expect (church staff) will talk to law enforcement," but insist that they be in on every single conversation.

It's long past time for church managers and lawyers to butt out when church members and employees want to call police and prosecutors about known or suspected pedophiles.
