Prairie Bible Institute in Three Hills;Alberta

CALGARY – Prairie Bible Institute will hire a third-party group to investigate claims of sexual abuse at the school in Three Hills, Alberta.

Linda Fossen, a former student who alleges she and dozens of others were abused during their time at the school has been calling for an independent investigation by a U.S. Christian organization.

Fossen alleges she was abused by her father, a former student and part-time employee of the school in the 1960s.

Fossen’s father, Charles Phelps, denies the allegations.

Fossen, who now lives in Florida, says she is sceptical that the college will be able to find an ‘impartial’ one in Canada since the school has a great deal of influence among Christian organizations across the country.

Fossen would like Prarie to hire Godly Response to Abuse in the Christian Environment, a U.S. non-profit group that works with church organizations facing abuse allegations.

The school’s board is meeting Thursday to make a decision.

Fossen claims to have been contacted by nearly 100 former students alleging abuse at Prairie.

So far, RCMP have received three complaints of abuse.

RCMP spokesman Sgt. Patrick Webb previously said the allegations involve Prairie “in name only” and the school itself isn’t under investigation for any kind of systematic abuse or cover-up.
