Testimony in the murder trial of ex-church janitor Jose Feliciano ended Thursday after a succession of witnesses called by the state, including a nun who counseled the suspect years ago and refuted his claim that he sought help to cope with childhood sex abuse by a priest.

Summations in the trial of the man charged with stabbing the Rev. Edward Hinds, pastor of St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church, 44 times on Oct. 22, 2009, in the rectory of the Chatham church are scheduled for Monday in Morristown. Prosecutors want a conviction for purposeful murder; the defense is seeking a verdict of manslaughter committed in the throes of passion or provocation.

Feliciano, now 66, had spent eight days on the witness stand testifying in his own defense during the two-month trial. Essentially, his story to the jury was that Hinds called him into the rectory on Oct. 22, 2009, and told him he was terminated for unspecified reasons related to “issues’’ in the parish. Feliciano, who worked at the church 18 years, stated the priest belittled his pleas to keep his job. He said he stabbed him in a spontaneous rage because the priest had been sexually fondling him for years and had verbally promised earlier that he wouldn’t be terminated.
