A northern Tasmanian man will spend at least two years in prison for recording child sexual abuse and sharing it on the internet.

Christopher John Wright pleaded guilty to 16 child exploitation charges, including committing indecent acts and assault against a child.

The 31-year-old from West Launceston was arrested in January after United States investigators told Australian Federal Police he was using email to send and receive child pornography.

Wright admitted taking sexually explicit photos and videos of a young girl.

He then emailed the footage to at least two other people.

The abuse took place at the Ravenswood Christian Fellowship centre where Wright's mother is a pastor.

Wright was also found with thousands of sexual images and videos of children on his computer.

In sentencing, Chief Justice Ewan Crawford said the depicted children were victims of Wright's depravity.

Wright has been sentenced to four years in prison.

He will be eligible for release after serving half his sentence.

His name will be added to the sex offenders register for six years after his release.
