HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) - A court hearing to try resolve the Mater Dolorosa trespass controversy has been postponed until after the new year.

Protesters have been holding vigil inside the closed church in Holyoke for more than 200 days now, and the Diocese of Springfield is trying to get them to leave.

Bishop Timothy McDonnell was scheduled to be in court Wednesday for a hearing on the issue, but according to diocesan spokesperson Mark Dupont, the court has postponed the hearing until January 4th.

The church has been closed since June when the parish was merged with Holy Cross to form the new Our Lady of the Cross Parish. Mater Dolorosa parishioners appealed to the Vatican, but they ruled in favor of the Springfield Diocese.
