DEKALB COUNTY, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -
The New Birth Christian Academy Board of Directors announced in a statement Tuesday that it will temporarily close the school, after operating for several years with what the board said was "substantial budget deficits."
The Lithonia school is operated by the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, led by Bishop Eddie L. Long. New Birth boasts a membership of more than 25,000.
The Board said that declining enrollment at the school was also a factor in its decision.
Officials called the closing a business decision and said they "will do everything within our power to reopen the school at some point in the near future."
