A Northern Cheyenne tribal member alleges she was sexually abused more than 50 years ago by a well known priest while attending school in Southeastern Montana.

The victim, listed as Jane Doe to protect her identity, accuses Father Emmett Hoffmann of molesting and raping her over a period of time.

The complaint was filed Friday against St. Labre Mission School and the Roman Catholic Bishop Diocese of Great Falls - Billings, among other groups.

The victim's lawyer says the woman, now in her 60's, has come forward because she is seeking justice for the alleged sexual abuse.

The victim's attorney, Vito de la Cruz, says the abuse began as a disciplinary measure with spanking and then evolved over time into rape.

Hoffmann was well-known in the Northern Cheyenne community and is said to live in southeastern Montana in a retirement home.

The matter is currently in Cascade County District Court.
