The Diocese of Youngs-town has been found compliant with the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People during the annual compliance audit.

The charter was developed by the USCCB Ad Hoc Committee for Sexual Abuse in 2002 in response to the sexual abuse crises in the church.

The charter was revised in 2005 and 2011.

The onsite audit, conducted by the independent firm Stonebridge Business Partners of Rochester, New York, took place in October 2011.

The audit included review of diocesan policy and procedures, and interviews with Bishop George V. Murry, priests, Catholic school principals, members of the diocesan Review Board on the Sexual Abuse of Minors, and diocesan staff.

The diocese fully cooperates with the mandates of the charter and includes charter requirements in the diocesan Child Protection Policy.

The policy includes requirements for background checks, in-service training sessions, codes of conduct, reporting procedures, help for victims and more.

Copies of the policy are available on the diocesan website, www.cathdoy.org, or by calling 330-744-8451, ext. 235.

A new brochure, “Reporting Requirements and Procedures Regarding Child Abuse,” is also available. The charter is available from the USCCB at www.usccb.org and through the link on the diocesan website.

For more information on the Diocese of Youngstown Child Protection Policy, contact Nancy Yuhasz at 330-744-8451, ext. 235.
