A Catholic priest whose duties were suspended after allegations of sex assault of a minor has retired, according to St. Gabriel the Archangel Church in Colorado Springs.

Father Charles Robert Manning, who has been with the church since 2007, had planned to retire this spring, said Dean Doug Flinn, a spokesman for the Diocese of Colorado Springs.

On Jan. 4 Colorado Springs police informed Manning that he is being investigated on allegations of sexual abuse of a child. He was placed on adminstrative leave and suspended from priestly duties.

Subsequently, Manning’s retirement was advanced a few months to Jan. 23.

In the past year, Manning’s health has been declining, according to parishioners of St. Gabriel’s. He has appeared at church masses using an oxygen tank, they said. Parishioners were told that Manning planned to retire this spring due to his declining health.

Manning was ordained in 1997 and served in three St. Louis, MO Catholic parishes before coming to St. Gabriel the Archangel Catholic Church in Colorado Springs.

The police investigation is on-going, said Barbara Miller, spokeswoman for the police department.
