The archdiocese maintains that some church closings and mergers are needed because of the severe priest shortage, population shifts and financial necessity. Here is a quick look at which churches will close, merge and cluster in the coming years. By the end of the year, 214 additional parishes, not included here will submit plans to the archdiocese to collaborate, cluster and potentially merge or close down the road.

Two closing

These two parishes will close as early as 2012.

1. Our Lady Queen of Peace, 20955 Bournemouth St., Harper Woods (Note: The church building will be for sale as of June 30; parish activities will continue at the site until the sale is made.)

2. St. Donald Parish, 16330 E. Twelve Mile Road, Roseville.

8 merging into 4 parishes by end of 2012

These eight parishes will merge into four parishes by the end of 2012.

3. St. Clement, 12255 Frazho Road, and 4. St. Teresa of Avila, 14057 E. Nine Mile, both in Warren, will merge and consider using a single worship site. In addition, each parish will submit an acceptable debt repayment plan to be approved by the Archdiocese of Detroit by June 30.

5. St. Francis Xavier, 4250 W. Jefferson, Ecorse will merge with

6. Our Lady of Lourdes, 1440 Coolidge Highway, River Rouge.

7. St. Joseph, 353 Elm St., and 8. St. Elizabeth, 138 Goodell, in Wyandotte, will merge and St. Elizabeth will close.

9. St. Genevieve, 29015 Jamison, and 10. St. Maurice, 32765 Lyndon, in Livonia, will merge.

6 must craft debt plans or will be closed or merged

These six parishes must submit acceptable debt repayment plans to be approved by the Archdiocese of Detroit by June 30, or they will be closed or merge with a neighboring parish:

11. Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Grotto), 13770 Gratiot in Detroit.

12. SS. Simon and Jude, 32500 Palmer Road in Westland

13. St. Alexander, 27835 Shiawassee in Farmington Hills

14. St. Clare of Assisi, 29200 W. Ten Mile in Farmington Hills

15. St. Florian, 2626 Poland St. in Hamtramck

16. St. Mel, 7506 Inkster Road in Dearborn Heights

23 to merge into 11 parishes by end of 2013

17. Our Lady Queen of Angels, 4200 Martin, and

18. St. Stephen-Mary Mother of the Church, 4311 Central, both in Detroit, will develop a plan to merge.

19. St. Alphonsus, 13540 Gould St. in Dearborn,

20. St. Clement, 19600 Ford Road in Dearborn, 21. St. Barbara, 13534 Colson Ave. in Dearborn and

22. St. Cunegunda, 5900 St. Lawrence St. in Detroit will develop a plan to merge, expecting to use multiple worship sites.

23. St. Anthony Lithuanian, 1750 Twenty-fifth St. in Detroit and 24. Divine Providence Lithuanian, 25335 W. Nine Mile Road in Southfield will develop a plan to merge.*

25. St. Francis D'Assisi, 4500 Wesson and 26. St. Hedwig, 3245 Junction parishes, both in Detroit, will develop a plan to merge.

27. St. Irene, 576 Main St. in Dundee and 28. St. Joseph, 8295 Van Aiken in Ida will develop a plan to merge.

29. St. Joseph, 16101 Rotunda and 30. St. Martha, 18200 Oakwood, both in Dearborn, will develop a plan to merge.

31. St. Leo, 4860 Fifteenth St. and 32. St. Cecilia, 10400 Stoepel, both in Detroit, will develop a plan to merge and consider use of buildings to maintain their outreach services.

33. St. Mary, 32447 Church St. in Rockwood and

34. St. Victor, 14100 Navarre St. in Gibraltar, will develop a plan to merge.

35. St. Mary of Redford, 14750 St. Marys St. and 36. St. Luke, 8017 Ohio St., both in Detroit, will develop a plan to merge and consider use of buildings to maintain their outreach services.

37. St. Patrick, 140 Superior in Wyandotte will develop a plan to merge with the previously merged parish of 38. St. Joseph and 39. St. Elizabeth in Wyandotte.

7 to merge into 3 parishes between 2014 and 2016

40. Sacred Heart, 18430 Utica Road in Roseville,

41. St. Athanasius, 18720 Thirteen Mile Road in Roseville, and

42. Our Lady Queen of All Saints, 31740 Cyril Dr. in Fraser will submit a plan to merge in 2014.* In addition, Sacred Heart will submit an acceptable debt repayment plan to be approved by the Archdiocese of Detroit by June 30.

43. St. Isaac Jogues, 21100 Madison St. in St. Clair Shores and 44. St. Angela, 25001 Chippendale St. in Roseville will submit a plan to cluster in 2014 and merge in 2015.

45. St. Lucy, 23401 Jefferson Ave. and 46. St. Joan of Arc, 22412 Overlake St., both in St. Clair Shores, will submit a plan to merge by 2016.

7 have individual plans

These seven churches have plans that do not fit the preceding categories.

47. Holy Family, 27800 Annapolis Road in Inkster, will cease functioning as a parish but will remain in use as a chapel under the jurisdiction of St. Mary in Wayne. No date is presently set for this transition.
