FALMOUTH, Trelawny — An Anglican priest who has been charged by the Trelawny police with two counts of carnal abuse was yesterday morning granted bail when he appeared in the Falmouth Resident Magistrate's Court.

Resident Magistrate Icolyn Reid granted the priest bail in the sum of $400,000 and demanded that as a part of his bail condition he surrender his travel documents. The clergyman is required to report at the Clark's Town Police Station at 7:00 am on Mondays and Fridays.

Additionally, the court also recommended that he not offer any counselling to young ladies until a conclusion of the matter.

The priest is scheduled to return to the Clark's Town RM Court on Monday, April 23.

He is accused of having sexual intercourse with a minor, who is a ward of the state.

Police allege that an intimate relationship developed between the man of the cloth and the young girl after she became a member of his church.

The clergyman was arrested by detectives from the Centre for the Investigation of Sexual Offences and Child Abuse on Sunday, March 4.

Attorney-at-law Ernie Smith, who is representing the priest, expressed confidence that his client will be acquitted of the charge.

"Insofar as the future of the case is concerned, I am pretty confident that he shall be exonerated," Smith told journalists.
