The clock is ticking for victims of the Mount Cashel sex abuse scandal who have not yet come forward to make a claim for compensation. The Christian Brothers are seeking Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States and that affects claimants in this province and elsewhere.

The Mount Cashel Orphanage scandal hit the province in the late '80's and early 90's as young men started to come forward about sexual abuse at the hands of the Irish Christian Brothers. It was one of the first scandals involving sexual abuse within the Catholic Church in North America, and sparked an intense investigation and inquiry that rocked both the Church and the province's criminal justice system. Lawyer Geoff Budden represents 46 men who were abused as children. He says the bankruptcy is something his firm has been preparing for. Budden says those seeking compensation will have to do so before August 1st. After that time he says it's unlikely there will be any further prospects for compensation.

Budden says his firm is arguing that all the Christian Brothers' assets be used to compensate victims. He says they are claiming $50 million in assets, part of which the Christian Brothers would like to see go towards the care of aging brothers, and for their continuing mission work. He says the bankruptcy court will ultimately decide the outcome.
