Few court cases have been taken so far in Asia against Catholic priests alleged to have sexually abused children, according to the Archbishop of Manila.

Dr Luis Antonio Tagle told the International Eucharistic Congress that directives are being prepared by the Filipino hierarchy on how to deal with the police when allegations arise

Today's activities at the Congress are built around the theme of "Communion in Marriage and the Family".

The Supreme Knight of the Knights of Columbus, Carl Anderson, will also give personal testimony as a husband and father, of the influence of the Eucharist on his faith.

Mr Anderson is a former advisor to the late US President Ronald Regan.

Meanwhile, Pope Benedict’s representative at the IEC, Cardinal Marc Ouellet, is to visit President Michael D Higgins at Áras an Uachtaráin today.

The Papal Legate will later travel to the ancient penitential pilgrimage site on Lough Derg in Co Donegal, where he will spend the night.

A spokeswoman for the Congress said he was making the visit in a personal capacity.
