Verdict in Philadelphia – Monsignor William Lynn Child Endangerment Charge

The jury in Philadelphia has heard the cry of unprotected children and we are grateful.

We believe the cause of innocent children has been advanced today and we are grateful.

We believe all bishops and all chanceries staffs have effectively been put on notice that is criminally wrong to put the protection of adults, priests or any other adult, before the protection of innocent children—particularly when the children made their plight known to those in positions of moral and spiritual leadership. For this, we are grateful.

We believe there should not be a delay in the sentencing of Monsignor William Lynn. The jury has spoken: children need protection.

We cannot understand why Catholic moral and spiritual leaders in Philadelphia needed two grand jury reports which required the spending of taxpayer money coupled with the spending of millions of dollars in Catholic money on attorneys’ fees to get this simple understanding of whom they should protect.

We urgently hope the legislators of the State of Pennsylvania hear the cry of children and judgment of citizens when children are endangered. We urgently hope they will respond by acting to protect children with extended statute of limitations to report abuse and give access to justice to the survivors of sexual abuse.

We hope the Catholics of Philadelphia begin to show where they stand with a re-direction of contributions to this weekend’s Peter Pence collection – pointedly shifting money from a fund for Vatican use to survivor organizations.

For the survivors who courageously came forward, we are grateful. Without the courage of the survivors Catholics and all of society do not have the knowledge of what has happened to children under the “protection” of the Catholic Church.
