Rev. Salvatore Cordileone, the newly-appointed Roman Catholic archbishop of San Francisco, was arrested this weekend on suspicion of drunk driving, San Diego police said.

The newly-appointed Roman Catholic archbishop of San Francisco was arrested this weekend on suspicion of drunk driving, San Diego police said.

Rev. Salvatore Cordileone, 56, was arrested early Saturday morning after he was stopped by cops at a checkpoint near the San Diego State University campus, police spokesman Detective Gary Hassen said.

Hassen did not say whether Rev. Cordileone took a sobriety test.

Last month, Pope Benedict XVI chose Rev. Cordileone to replace Archbishop George Niederauer, who is set to retire this October. Cordileone was expected to assume the post on Oct. 4, the feast day for St. Francis of Assisi.

Rev. Cordileone currently serves as the bishop of Oakland, a position he has held since 2009.

The San Diego native is an avid opponent of same-sex marriage, telling the National Catholic Register last year that gay marriage is "a very serious social experiment that will have dire consequences."

Rev. Cordileone played a major role in getting Proposition 8, California's same-sex marriage ban, before voters in 2008. He reportedly raised over $1 million to qualify the ban for the ballot - $6,000 of which he personally donated, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

PROP 8 UNCONSTITUTIONAL, COURT RULES

A federal appeals court ruled Proposition 8 unconstitutional this February, setting the stage for a battle in the U.S. Supreme Court as early as next year.

Rev. Cordileone has been chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops' Subcommittee for the Promotion and Defense of Marriage since last year.
