Joseph W. Tobin, the new archbishop of Indianapolis, said today that his predecessor has left him with a “wonderful gift” in Indianapolis.

Tobin, a high-ranking Vatican official, succeeds Archbishop Daniel M. Buechlein, who resigned last year for health reasons. He addressed the press and Indianapolis residents during a conference this morning at SS. Peter and Paul Cathedral.

The new archbishop said he met this morning with Buechlein who handed him what he called a prophecy about his new post in Indianapolis.

“I accept it gratefully,” Tobin said as he raises a cloth with the word “Colts” and the team’s logo printed on it.

Tobin said being 60 years old, he’s “lived long enough to have wonderful experiences.”

“I’ve had to admit that I’ve been wrong,” he said. “I’ve had the experience of asking for forgiveness.”

Buechlein resigned in September 2011 after more than 19 years with the archdiocese. Tobin, who said he did not request to leave his old post, will be installed Dec. 3.
