A five-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a temple priest in Mangolpuri here two days ago.

According to the police, the victim had gone to a temple close to her house. The priesttook her inside the temple on the pretext of giving prasad and allegedly raped her. The accused also warned her against telling anyone about the act.

The girl, however, returned home and told her parents about the incident.

The parents then approached the police and a case was registered under section 376 of the Indian Penal Code. A medical examination of the victim confirmed rape.

The girl had gone to the temple alone and there was no one present there except the priest at the time of the incident, said the police.

The priest was subsequently arrested.

On Saturday, the workers of the newly-founded Aam Aadmi Party, led by its convenor Arvind Kejriwal, and a large number of locals had staged a protest outside the Narela police station here for several hours accusing the police of not taking action in a similar case.

The case pertained to the alleged rape of a minor by her 60-year-old neighbour a week ago.

The activists had demanded registration of an FIR in the matter.

Aam Aadmi Party workers claimed that the police manhandled them when they along with the family of the victim and locals reached the police station in the morning demanding registration of the FIR. The police gave in to their demand after Mr. Kejriwal reached there, they added. The police, for their part, maintained that the case had been registered even before the protest began. No arrests have been made in the case so far and the police are looking for the accused.
