The current head of the Diocese of Los Angeles, Archbishop Jose Gomez, relieved his predecessor retired Cardinal Roger Mahony of any public duties, after the Diocese released documents detailing its “failure to protect young people” from abuse by priests.

In a letter to the Diocese, Archbishop Gomez reinforced that there was no excuse to justify the abuse, and acknowledged it as a failure. He also apologized to the victims and expressed his desire to help them heal.

The letter also states the archbishop had accepted the resignation of Auxilary Bishop Thomas Curry, who served as Vicar for Clergy under Cardinal Mahony.

As a part of a lawsuit filed against the Diocese, a U.S. Court ordered it to release hundreds of emails, letters and internal memos pertaining to the sex abuse investigation. Cardinal Mahony served as Archbishop for the Diocese of Los Angeles for 26 years, before stepping down in 2011, after reaching the mandatory age of retirement.
