You must step-up now, President Obama, as leaders in Australia, Ireland and elsewhere have. Enough of the “We must protect kids” sound bites. Many from around the world are seeking your help and signing the petition linked below. There is a national crisis and it is your duty to address it effectively and promptly.

A foreign nation, Vatican City, with its clerical “army” has invaded the USA. Many of its “troops”, rogue priests, have sexually assaulted over 100,000 children in the USA by its own experts’ estimates. Its “commanders”, in Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Boston, Kansas City, New York, Chicago, Milwaukee, Manchester, St. Louis, Bridgeport, Baltimore, Washington, DC and many other U.S. cities, have reportedly covered up “crimes against humanity” and overwhelmed local defenses by dominating local political leaders and prosecutors.

The casualties, innocent child victims of sexual assaults, are left on the clerical battlefield for underfunded government agencies to try to assist at taxpayer expense. Its commanders, including Cardinals Mahony, Law, Rigali, Dolan, O’Malley, Wuerl and George, and Bishops Gomez, Bransfield, Finn, Lori, Murphy, Listecki and Chaput, clearly have gotten, and still get, their orders straight from Rome.

This week’s firing of Cardinal Mahony by his junior officer, Archbishop Gomez, obviously at the Pope’s direction, just confirms this. Gomez’ gratuitous negative remarks clearly help to undercut Mahony’s legal defense, in my judgment as an experienced lawyer. Mahony is clearly being singled out by the Vatican’s Opus Dei-types likely for his earlier slights to Mother Angelica and the EWTN clique and similar traditionalist forces. The imminent battle among voting Cardinals over papal succession has just begun in Los Angeles. Are other voting Cardinals paying attention? Which of them will get picked off next? Please see my relevant remarks at http://wp.me/P2YEZ3-gW .

And what about the children, President Obama?

The Pope tried in November to dump you with a anti-contraceptive crusade aimed at denying U.S. couples access to family planning. Cardinal Dolan still is not satisfied with your latest effort to please the Pope, while your Defense Secretary, Leon Panetta, just publicly kissed the Pope’s ring. This was very discouraging, especially since Mr. Panetta had been on the U.S. Bishops’ first Child Protection Board in 2003 and knows well of the Pope’s bad record on U.S. child protection. Hopefully, Mr. Panetta was not picking up the Pope’s direction to you on whom to select as the new U.S. Ambassador to the Vatican.

You were recently referred to by a papal pawn as “Hitler”, and the German Justice Minister just criticised the Pope’s new German Inquisitor for similar tasteless Holocaust allusions. The abrupt and public sacking this week of Cardinal Mahony by a subordinate, who was only following the Pope’s orders evidentally, indicates the imminent “war” over papal succession has begun on U.S. soil.

It is the fourth quarter, Mr. President, and children in the USA are losing badly. It is time to stop warming up and to get into the game and give it your best shot. Ireland’s Enda Kenny and Australia’s Julia Gillard have already scored well for the “Celtics”. Your new chief of staff went to a Catholic school that had numerous abuse cases at its adjacent abbey. His brother handled as a canon lawyer abuse claims for the local diocese. Your new aide can fill you in, if necessary.

As a fellow God-fearing parent and graduate of Harvard Law School as are you, President Obama, and your wife, Michelle, I appeal to both of you to step up to protect children and secure justice for the survivors of sexual abuse in religious settings. My God, your God, the God of Christians, Jews and Muslims, all people of the book, demands no less. Since we learned from the same teachers, I have no doubt you fully undestand what has happened and continues to happen. Priests, rabbis, ministers, nuns, and other religious teachers are sexually abusing trusting children and only the Federal government has the reources and clout to stop these obscenities.

It seems evident that this is just the tip of the iceberg of child sexual abuse in religious organizational settings. What is disturbingly also evident, to me as a parent and a retired experienced lawyer, is that neither local legislators nor prosecutors have dealt with many of these cases adequately, timely or comprehensively. President Obama, you were just re-elected with the strong support of mothers and mothers-to-be who wanted you to protect their access to family planning. They also expected, and still expect, your help in protecting the families they have, and will yet have, from sexual violence in institutional settings. These families desperately need your help now!

A petition has been opened for signatures asking you, President Obama, to set up a national investigation commission into the sexual abuse of children by priests, rabbis, ministers and other religious leaders. Readers here, please take 30 seconds to sign it no matter where in the world you live. This is a worldwide epidemic. Just click on the below link at:

Believing parents and innocent children have too often been betrayed by religious leaders they trusted too much. The obscene revelations of child sexual abuse from Boston, Philly, Milwaukee, Kansas City, St.Louis, Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Phoenix, Manchester, Salt Lake City and many other U.S. cities confirm this cancer cannot be curtailed effectively by local political leaders and prosecutors. They seem frequently incapable and/or unwilling to apply or amend a hodgepot of inconsistent laws, often outdated and inadequate, to powerful religious organizations.

The new award winning HBO documentary, “Mea Maxima Culpa”, that begins airing internationally in English and Spanish on this Monday evening, February 4, shows, for example, graphically and incisively how local governmental authorities and the Catholic Church hierarchy in the USA and in the Vatican failed for decades to protect over 200 defenseless deaf boys from sexual abuse allegedly by a single Milwaukee priest.

Last night, Bill Maher interviewed on HBO the Mea Maxima Culpa filmmaker, Academy Award winner, Alex Gibney. Since Alex was raised a Catholic, his views were very revealing. He reaffirmed his conviction that many priests and the Catholic Church overall do great good. He also laid most of the blame for the failure to curtail effectively priest child abuse on the Pope’s doorstep.

Instead of being made to account for child endangerment on their watch, leaders like these Cardinals sail off into well funded retirements, leaving high priced lawyers behind to clean up the mess they leave behind. Abuse survivors often must fend for themselves. Trusting Catholics, whose children were at risk of priest sex abuse and whose churches and schools are ruthlessly being closed, are expected to fund the billions spent by the Catholic hierarchy on a flawed and shameful legal strategy aimed mainly at protecting the hierarchy from prosecution.

The decisive Australian Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, has just established a major investigation commission into the sexual abuse of children in organizational settings, by priests, rabbis, ministers, teachers, nuns, coaches, scout leaders and similar custodial persons. The establishment of her commission has already had much positive impact. In polls, the commission has gotten the support of almost 90% of Australians.

A U.S. poll would likely show similar results.

Since many of the survivors of organizational sex abuse end up needing governmental financial support, the U.S. is already spending considerable amounts to help survivors, which is as it should be. It would be better, as well, to reduce the number, and extent, of the suffering survivors by the Federal government identifying through a commission actions to deter these sexual crimes more effectively than too many failing local governments and compromised organizations have done so far.

President Obama, you recently said the first duty of government is to protect children from violence. Now you must step up and do so by establishing this special national commission. Raping children is surely as horrific as shooting them and both forms of violence must be curtailed now.

Please ask others through Facebook, Twitter and other social media to sign the petition as well. It is little to ask to help protect children.
