The Taoiseach has again declined to offer a full apology to the survivors of the Magdalene laundries. He appealed for "space" to formulate the Government's response.

Opposition parties have rounded on Enda Kenny in the Dail this morning after groups representing the women expressed their outrage that he had not given the apology they expected for the role played by the state in the laundry system.

This morning, the Taoiseach says the report needed to be examined, reflected on and debated in the Dail in two weeks time.

However, in a signal that he may make an apology then, he appealed for space to decide what to do.

"The process by which we bring closure and reconciliation (in this case) is one that deserves really genuine consideration by government and I intend to see that that happens," he said.

"I'd like the space to work with government in putting in place a process and a structure by which the state, insofar as it can, brings closure and reconciliation."
