Cardinal Sean O'Malley is reportedly among the names being weighed as Pope Benedict XVI's successor among Italian journalists.

According to the National Catholic Reporter, the Boston cardinal's work as a reformer during the church sex abuse scandal is one of the reasons his name has created a buzz in the Italian press.

Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York has also been considered a potential American prospect.

The newspaper reports that the potential for an American pope would have been nearly impossible in centuries past, but with the U.S. no longer being considered the lone world superpower, the possibility is more likely in the 21st century. Experts do say, however, the likelihood of an American pope is still remote.
