Catholic cardinals will meet for a conclave starting on Tuesday to elect the next pope after Benedict XVI's historic resignation, the Vatican said in a statement.

A pre-conclave meeting of cardinals "has decided that the Conclave will begin on Tuesday, 12 March 2013," the statement said.
