Darin L. Evans, 41, of Ohio turned himself in to Elmhurst police on Monday on charges of criminal sexual assault and aggravated criminal sexual abuse. The former Villa Park man had served as a pastor at West Suburban Community Church in Elmhurst before leaving the state.

ELMHURST — A former Villa Park man who served as a pastor in Elmhurst is facing 11 counts of criminal sexual assault and two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse after turning himself in to police.

Elmhurst police charged Darin L. Evans, 41, of Dover, Ohio, on Monday. Evans is a former associate pastor of West Suburban Community Church in Elmhurst.

In February, Elmhurst police detectives were notified of the alleged abuse that occurred between 2004 and 2006.

A senior pastor at the church had read a letter of confession from Evans to the congregation last month, according to media reports. Evans wrote the letter after the alleged victim told church leaders about Evan's alleged sexual conduct.

Evans was a pastor at the church for 11 years before resigning last year and moving his wife and three children from their home in Villa Park to Ohio.

Before leaving for Ohio, Evans was a recognized youth leader in Elmhurst. In addition to leading the youth ministry at West Suburban Community Church, 825 Van Auken St., he was appointed by the Elmhurst City Council to serve on the Elmhurst Commission on Youth in October 2011.

Evans also worked with Young Life, a christian organization for high school students.

Details on the charges were not immediately available. Evans turned himself in to Elmhurst police Monday morning, and he's scheduled to appear in bond court on Tuesday.
